Using Deep Search

How to run a Deep Search — selecting data sources, setting time options, providing context with facts, notes, text, links, and files, and understanding the results.

Using Deep Search

News → Deep Searchlets you pose a specific question and receive a focused answer drawn from your selected data sources. This page explains how to set up and run a deep search effectively.

  1. Go toNews → Deep Search.
  2. Type your question in the question field. Use a clear, specific, natural-language question for best results (for example:"What regulatory changes affected the pharmaceutical sector last month?").
  3. Select one or moredata sourcesto search within.
  4. Optionally configure additional options described in the sections below.
  5. ClickSearch.

The system will run an automated, multi-step investigation and return an answer with references to the source documents it used.

Selecting Data Sources

Deep Search runs exclusively within the data sources you select. Choosing the right sources is the most important factor in getting a good answer.

  • Select sources that are likely to cover the topic of your question.
  • You can select multiple sources to broaden coverage.
  • If a source requires credentials (such as an API key), ensure it is configured underOptions → Secrets.

⚠️The answer is based only on the selected data sources. If those sources do not contain sufficient relevant information, the answer may be incomplete, inconclusive, or inaccurate. Always review the cited source documents to verify the response.

Time Options

Use theTimefilter to limit the search to a specific period. Narrowing the time window helps when your question is about recent developments and prevents outdated content from influencing the answer.

  • Relative range— such aslast 7 daysorlast 3 months— stays current as time passes.
  • Absolute range— a specific start and/or end date.

If the selected data sources do not support date filtering, this option may have no effect.

Adding Context with Facts

Factsare reusable background snippets that give the AI model additional context when generating the answer. Attaching the right fact can significantly improve result quality — for example, by telling the model which company or domain your question relates to.

In theFactssection of the Deep Search form:

  • Any fact you have marked asdefaultis pre-selected automatically.
  • You can add, remove, or swap facts for this specific search without changing your saved defaults.
  • Use theAI Suggestionbutton to let the system recommend which of your saved facts are most relevant to your question.

For guidance on creating effective facts, seeSettings → Facts.

Using Notes as Additional Sources

You can forward notes saved inNews → Notesdirectly to Deep Search as supplementary source material. This is useful when you have already collected relevant articles or observations and want the search to take them into account alongside the live data sources.

To add notes:

  1. Go toNews → Notes.
  2. Select the notes you want to include.
  3. Click→ Deep Search (N)in the selection toolbar.

You will be taken to Deep Search with your selected notes already loaded. The model will use the content of those notes as additional evidence when forming its answer.

Beyond notes, you can supply additional source material directly in the Deep Search form:

Source typeHow to use
TextPaste or type any freeform text into the additional sources area. Useful for snippets, quotes, or observations you have not saved as notes.
Link (URL)Enter a web address. The system will fetch and include the content of that page as a source.
FileUpload a document (such as a PDF or text file). The content of the file is extracted and used as a source alongside the selected data sources.

These additional sources are combined with the data source results so the model can draw on all the material when composing the answer.

Suggested Follow-up Questions

After generating an answer, the AI model will suggest a set offollow-up questionsrelated to your original query. These suggestions can help you refine your investigation, explore adjacent topics, or dig deeper into a specific aspect of the answer. Click any suggested question to start a new Deep Search with that question pre-filled.

Understanding the Answer

The answer returned by Deep Search includes:

  • The response text— a synthesized answer to your question.
  • Source references— links to the specific documents the model used to compose the answer. Review these to verify the information.

⚠️The answer reflects only what the selected data sources contain at the time of the search. It is not supplemented by general AI knowledge. Treat the answer as a research starting point and always verify critical information against the cited sources.
